HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Review
HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Review: Features
Its head office bias is reflected in sensible features, such as a 225-sheet paper tray at its base, a 35-sheet duplex ADF at the top, and an ink supply that can hold up to 1,500 black pages or 825 colors. On the front there is a USB port, but you can only print photos from the inserted USB drive - not PDFs or other documents.
The OfficeJet Pro 6970 seems much wider than necessary and it's not the most user-friendly MFP. The large paper tray is difficult to load unless you remove two blue hooks near the back and pull it out. The lid doubles as an output tray and locks well to help you reload. However, the two parts of the telescope felt too loose and tended to stick for a moment as we lengthened or pulled it.
HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Review: Specifications
It's a fast printer for its price, reaching 4.7ppm in our color graphics testing, and producing black text at an impressive 18.5ppm. Fast copy in black, with a mono ten-page job takes only 89 seconds, but the color version takes twice as long and the duplex color copy edges at 2.1ppm.
HP's scanning interface relies too heavily on shortcuts and is too proscriptive, allowing only a predetermined set of resolution options. 6970 spent nearly five minutes scanning our 1,200dpi photos before giving up and not returning the image. We reset the host PC, reinstalled the HP driver and retryed it over a wired Ethernet connection, but the problem persists.
Scan quality is generally good, although our 600dpi photo scans look as if they are too sharpened and appear artificial when viewed at 100%. We were also disappointed with the faint tape that appeared in some graphic prints on plain paper
Color photos are great for non-specialist devices, but our black-and-white prints have a different green color. Using the highest capacity inventory, the 6970 costs around 6.8p to print mixed text pages and colour graphics - a few pence cheaper than usual at this price.
Performance HP OfficeJet Pro 6970
Setting up your device is as easy as you get. A very rich driver interface visually guides you through the process. During setup, you can link OfficeJet Pro 6970 using Wi-Fi, USB or LAN. The driver automatically detects our office Wi-Fi and connects the printer without manual intervention.
One of the most impressive things about OfficeJet Pro 6970 is its touch panel. You can control all the functions of an all-in-one device from the panel. It even includes a mini tutorial to fix any problems you might encounter such as low ink levels or jammed paper.
So, how does the HP all-in-one perform?
Whether it's plain paper or shiny photo paper, the printing quality of the OfficeJet Pro 6970 is the best we've ever seen. At the highest quality settings and without manual calibration, this results in very bright colors that perfectly match our reference images. Even on very thin 70 grams of plain paper, black text is equally impressive. There is not the slightest distortion or dissipation in the edges of the font.
OfficeJet Pro 6970 is also very fast. Although with high quality settings using plain paper, the printer only takes less than a minute to print in duplex mode. Printing using glossy photo paper (on the one hand) also takes less than a minute per page.
But there's a problem with the OfficeJet Pro 6970. And this is a big problem - the printing costs are relatively high.
HP sells cartridges of various sizes for this all-in-one printer. The largest 'XL' color cartridges cost around RM73 each. In our tests, yellow cartridges ran out after just 80 pages. So, at least in our tests, this puts the cost of color printing using OfficeJet Pro 6970 a little less than RM1 per page. This is certainly higher than other printers on the market including all-in-one from competitor manufacturers.
The cost of black printing is slightly better. HP's largest 'XXL' black ink cartridge costs RM175. In our tests, it started to dry out after 320 pages.
Indeed, our tests are designed to be heavy and drive device performance to be compared to other similar printers on the market. If you run a small office that doesn't have a heavy printing load, chances are you'll find that officeJet Pro 6970 costs a lot more economically.
Excluding relatively high operating costs, OfficeJet Pro 6970 is a fast and versatile all-in-one printer suitable for small or medium businesses.
